The Church’s Chicken to Go restaurant originally sold only chicken, though French fries and jalapenos were added to the menu later on. When George Church passed away in 1956, there were four different Church’s Chicken locations. The company was taken over by Leonard L. Church junior, and within only six years the company had expanded to include eight restaurants instead of the original offering of four.

Rapid growth followed this period, and Church’s chicken quickly became the second largest chicken-only restaurant chain by 1989, which is the year when it decided to merge with Popeye’s Chicken and Biscuits, consolidating supply lines. The two chains continued to market themselves separately, but worked together in some aspects of the business to keep both entities running smoothly. In 1996, the first ever female of a fast food restaurant was hired to head up Church’s Chicken; her name was Hala Moddelmog.

There are currently Church’s chicken restaurant franchise locations in Canada and Puerto Rico. There are more than seventy restaurants in Puerto Rico alone, making Church’s Chicken one of the top three largest restaurant chains on the entire island. The Canadian Church’s chicken restaurant locations are all in British Columbia, but there are plans for the franchise to expand outward from there in future years.

The Church’s Chicken Company was established in 1952 and began offering franchise opportunities twenty years later, in 1972. There are only 277 company-owned Church’s Chicken units, and a whopping 1285 Church’s Chicken business franchises located in Canada, Puerto Rico and in the United States as well.

The Church’s Chicken franchise is one of the world’s largest “quick service” chicken restaurant concepts, and the restaurant’s main focus is to provide high quality food at value pricing. There are a number of menu specialties that set Church’s chicken apart from its competitors, including southern style chicken, corn on the cob, okra, honey butter biscuits and much more. There are more than 1,500 locations available worldwide, and the Church’s Chicken franchise made approximately $900 million dollars in 2001 alone. Individuals interested in joining a fast paced franchise in the restaurant industry are urged to contact the Church’s Chicken company for more information relating to small business franchise opportunities.
