The Cassano’s Pizza King Franchise was originally established on June 4 of 1953 by a grocer in KetteringDaytonHannibal, Missouri. The company also operates several dozen Cassano’s Pizza Express kiosks that can be found in hotels, convenience stores and gas stations, and sells pre-frozen pizza dough under the ‘Cassano’s Fresh Frozen Dough Company’ name. named Victor J. Cassano. As of 2005, there were 34 different Cassano’s Pizza King restaurants in the area, and four other western Ohio Pizza King franchises, a franchise restaurant in Quincy of Illinois, and one more in
Between the mid 1980s and the late 1990s, the chain operated under the name ‘Cassano’s Pizza and Subs’. This is still common branding on some signage and menus as of 2007. There have also been Cassano’s Pizza King Franchise locations in Pennsylvania, Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, Michigan and a number of other United States. The chain had grown at one point to more than 100 locations before it was sold to Vic Cassano Jr., who turned around and sold the company to Greyhound Food Management Incorporated in 1986.
At this point, there were only 48 locations remaining. A massive expansion was planned for the pizzeria chain, opening between 100 and 150 new restaurants a year in order to compete with the Domino’s Pizza brand. The Greyhound Company did manage to open around 33 delivery-only restaurants over an 18-month period, using Columbus, Ohio as a test market, but the Cassano’s pizza was more expensive and while it competed well against dine-in restaurants, it was simply too high priced to accommodate competition against delivery-only outfits like the popular Domino’s Pizza franchise.
Cassano Junior and a Greyhound executive by the name of Randy Leasher ended up repurchasing the company in 1989. Business continued to decline over a period of time until only 29 restaurants existed in January of 1999. Cassano Junior managed to turn the company around several years later with the help of a turnaround consultant named Mark Heistand, and over the past few years the company has seen a tremendous turnaround including as much as 28 percent increases in orders over the first three years worth of regrouping.
