First established as Gold's Gym in 1977, World Gym International began offering franchise opportunities 1985. There are currently over 250 franchise units throughout the United States with three more in Canada. World Gym International offers two unique fitness franchise opportunities. The World Gym Full Service Club offers full personal training services, on site pro shops and juice bars complemented by superior service and a consistent, uniformly exceptional experience in franchise outlets throughout the country. The start-up costs of a World Gym Full Service Club ranges from $423,000 to $1.1 million with initial cash expenses totaling 20% to 30% of the upfront costs. Royalty payments are $6500 a year.

World Gym International also offers franchise opportunities to fitness buffs that want to offer exceptional services without full staffing. The World Gym 1440 All Axcess Key Club provides lower overhead and increased flexibility for franchise owners and World Gym members by offering 24 hour key-only access, seven days a week. The model requires fewer staff members and significantly lower start-up costs. Initial cost of a World Gym 1440 All Axcess Key Club facility starts at $65,000. The cash requirements at start-up is twenty percent of initial cost. The term of franchise agreement is three years.

There is no initial training offered to franchise applicants, but there are quarterly seminars held regionally throughout the United States. These seminars provide information on the latest fitness and nutrition information, access to vendors with the newest equipment and speakers and consultants that specialize in small business management, customer service and human resources management. Local marketing assistance is not provided but national ad campaigns raise the profile of the brand name and benefit all franchise owners.

When World Gym International grants a franchise application to a small business owner, they grant an exclusive license to operate World Gym International facilities in a large franchise territory, eliminating the need to compete with other World Gym International franchise owners.
